Looking for a speaker for your next conference, seminar, or professional development event? As Director of Civil Engineering with BLUERIDGE Analytics, Inc., David Settlemyer, PE, M.ASCE, is available to present on the trends, technologies, and challenges of the AEC industry.

2012 Topic: Site Optimization Modeling

Civil engineering technology has rapidly progressed over the past 30 years from simple designs, created with pencils and scales, to complex site models built with applications such as SITEOPS, Google SketchUp, Civil 3D, InRoads and GeoPak. With these complex site models comes the requirement of important decisions early in the conceptual stage of design. While major site changes may require a total redesign of the model, costing both time and money, new technologies have emerged over the past few years allowing design teams to view multiple site designs in a fraction of the time while creating more layout options. These models can easily be imported into CAD software or Google SketchUp to create 3D models.

The Site Optimization Modeling Seminar will discuss the importance of implementing Site Optimization Modeling (SOM) into your daily work flow. SOM technology will give the designer the ability to quickly create site plans and automatically optimize the grading and stormwater piping plans within hours rather than the days or weeks that it may take using traditional CAD tools. This technology gives the user a design with the lowest cost of construction, all while meeting the defined design constraints. During the seminar, a site design will be created from scratch using a proposed site from someone in attendance. The model will be graded and piped, then imported into Google SketchUp to demonstrate the ease of creating and modeling sites using SOM technology.

Let’s face it–in this economy, acquiring projects has become increasingly more difficult. The ability to stand out from the competition is as important today as being able to complete the actual design work. It is vital that the modern civil utilize new opportunities such as the latest design techniques.

The Site Optimization Modeling Seminar will demonstrate how civil engineers are leveraging the advancements of today’s technologies to help improve and grow their businesses. In this presentation, I will discuss how small firms and large firms alike are using such cloud based technologies, as well as present case studies that feature actual firms and the techniques that they implemented to grow and prosper in these trying times.
